Rulings of Prayer: Conditions and Components

An introductory lesson on the difference between the conditions of prayer and its components, and the consequences of neglecting each.

Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Husayn al-Musawi 1 min read 7

A condition is what must be fulfilled before and during the prayer, such as ritual purity and facing the qibla, while a component is what the prayer itself consists of, such as bowing and prostration. Neglecting a condition, deliberately or by mistake, generally invalidates the prayer, whereas the ruling on a component depends on whether it is a pillar or not.

In this lesson we review the five pillars, then the non-pillar obligations, with practical examples drawn from the questions people commonly ask.
